Information on joining the Provincial EMR

Shifting to EMR technology

The province is implementing innovative health information technology which will modernize how we collect, share and use patient/client information.

The Provincial EMR communicates with other systems across the continuum of care so health professionals can securely, efficiently, and effectively access and share patient and client information without signing on to another system. Physicians, Specialists, Nurses and Mental Health and Addiction Healthcare teams Island-wide will have access to patient and client medical records when they need them, to make the best possible decisions with the best possible information at hand.

Implementing the EMR into your practice or program will allow you to manage referrals electronically, document patient/client visits using standardized templates and forms, receive hospital-based clinical documents, laboratory results and diagnostic reports, allow providers to interact with pharmacy systems for prescription management, and exchange information with the provincial billing system.

Support through your Transition

Any community-based healthcare teams switching to the new electronic medical record system are provided with training and ongoing EMR and peer support offered through the provincial EMR program.

Your implementation team (i.e., a Telus Project Manager and an EMR Advisor) will work with you and your team to help you implement the EMR and ensure you minimize disruption to patient or client care throughout the process.

Considerations when Transitioning to an Electronic Medical Record

How will EMR technology benefit the delivery of care to patients and clients?

The EMR is a single, province-wide health information system you can access from your clinic, site, the hospital or anywhere with a secure internet connection. The many benefits include:

  • Informed clinical decisions with efficient access to more comprehensive patient/client records that include hospital-based clinical documentation and diagnostics, pharmacy data for managing patient prescriptions, and reports from other care providers interacting with the patient associated with the electronic record;
  • Improved business operations with more efficient patient/client scheduling, automated practice billing and management of patient information; and
  • Patient/client care advancements, including providing virtual visits, electronic referrals, requisitions and prescription management, as well as chronic disease management tools and reminders.

The TELUS Collaborative Health Record (CHR) is the solution that was selected for the Provincial EMR. For more information visit Collaborative Health Record | TELUS Health. You can also watch the recorded Telus CHR Demonstration.
